Avsky, where did you hear that vegans can't eat yeast, chocolate, etc.?
Or really, anyone who has heard these things, I'd like to know what source is spreading this, as it is not true. Vegans would not eat chocolate that had milk in it (or rennet, or other animal surprises), and one certain red dye that comes from insects (carmine/cochineal), but vegan dark chocolate, yeast, mushrooms, and chemically derived red dyes (i.e. - not carmine) are all perfectly compatible with the vegan lifestyle, as they are not animal products. (Though individual vegans might not eat them for whatever personal reason, but they're not necessary to avoid to be vegan, even the strictest vegan.)
So...where did you (Avsky, or anyone else who has encountered this misinformation) read or hear that strict vegans cannot consume these things?
Answers:
It is a very odd thing with the yeast… and well, mushrooms are certainly a new addition.
:)
Hopefully your person will answer, but here is what I can figure. At some point people decided yeast was an animal… perhaps because you can buy “live” yeast, and because they don’t realize that vegetables are “alive” they relate “live” to being a sentient creature?
Anyway, people started informing them that yeast was a fungus, like a mushroom, and I guess they decided they couldn’t eat mushrooms either. Maybe?
And as for chocolate, I guess because ucky companies like Hershey and Mars dominate the standard grocery store and gas station isles. Again, this is all speculation.
:)
As for my final addition, I feel the need to share that (as with most misinformation) you can find websites confirming this. Mind you, if it is for religious reasons or some such, then it would not be misinformation; however, the following sites talk about yeast as a vegan issue, not a religious issue. And well, you can also find websites saying that vegetarians eat animals, so who knows? :)

EDIT- Maybe they could also link mushrooms to root vegetables? I know some people cannot eat roots... something about them being connected the base chakra. But again, that is not veganism, but some other branch thereof.
Of course, it is also possible that the person is an anorexic, hiding under the veil of veganism (no offence toward Avsky, seeing as how I don't know who s/he is).

you should try messaging her this question, if she doesn't see it here.
lol don't get me started on the cochineal...I can tell you of one person who likes to post here and how she decided to inform everyone that all red dyes and anything with CARAMEL color(that one was funny) or "natural flavors" all contain bugs..ie cochineal. I dont know why but that drove me nuts, I became the cochineal police there for a few days...:)
lol im sorry i cant help it.there is no rule to being a vegan? Ok I eat fish, chicken, beef, pork, milk, and eggs. But I am a vegan. :| I don't get it.
I think they can eat whatever type of dessert that they want...some vegans drink milk, eat eggs, peanuts, and fish...and some just stick to vegtables and fruits...noone cant tell you what you can and cant eat, there is no rule to being a vegan
