Why did you decide to go vegetarian/vegan?!

Question:

Why did you decide to go vegetarian/vegan?

It seems like it would be pretty hard.

But anyway, I'm interested in hearing your stories.

I was training insanely to acquire a Black Belt in Karate - running more than 20 miles a week - in addition to Karate classes and could not lose weight. I needed to be in perfect shape to get a Black Belt. Removed red meat from my diet with almost immediate results. Next came chicken and then I got my Black Belt.

Twenty years later I don’t miss meat.

My friends have had multiple heart attacks, take blood pressure and cholesterol lowering medication. I’m in great health. Don’t do Karate anymore (to many injuries) but in a gym several times a week.

I’m not an animal rights activist, and don’t care what you eat.

I eat what keeps me healthy.

i went vegitarian in 6th grade. my friends and i felt really bad for the cows, pigs, and other animals that were being consumed. as i matured, i grew out of my "animal activist" stage, but when i tried to eat meat again i couldnt do it. it just wasnt appealing anymore. so now im 22 and still dont eat meat.=)

My imagination and understanding of anatomy and physiology is to good. I cannot look at meat without knowing what part it came from and that it was once part of something walking around and thinking. I am not a "militant" veggie, nor an animal rights activist, I just cannot stomach meat. My family all eats it, and that's their choice. What I find amusing is that someone who doesn't think twice about eating a cow, chicken or game meat is disgusted by the thought of eating pigeon, horse or some other animal that isn't in the acceptable "meat" group. What's the difference?

i dont feel its good for us i dont think we was ment to eat meat and i also think the way the cows and pig, chickens ect are keep is unclean and they suffer two

My sisters were both vegetarian, and I'd always looked up to them. One day I was reading one of their issues of Vegetarian Times, and it gave some frightening statistic about the number of cows/chickens the average person consumes in their lifetime! It was absolutely shocking to me, and an absolute reality check. So I decided to be vegetarian for a few weeks.

It was really amazing. I started to feel so much better and have so much more energy, and I didn't really (and still don't miss) miss meat.

A few years after, I became lactose intolerant. So I cut out all animal products, and became vegan.

It's hard in the beginning, but now I can't imagine life before my vegetarianism.

i dont like killing animals

I started a vegetarian diet initially because a lot of my friends were trying it. I've kept it up because of environmental reasons, as well as for health benefits (no more Wendy's, McDonald's, etc.). But above all, after only a couple weeks of eating other things, I realized I didn't miss meat at all. Not to mention the substitutes like Smart Ground and Boca are very tasty, and have tons of protein. I've also found I eat tons more fruits and vegetables, and have more energy than when I stuffed myself with burgers. Overall, it's hard to criticize a diet that's high in everything but fat and cholesterol. The only hard part was convincing myself to start! (:

i became a vegetarian on January 1st 2007. I just did it cuz i felt like a hard new years resolution.
so far i have kept it...well except 1 night when i ordered a salad at wendys. it had bacon on it and it was dark and i didnt see it : ( so........... *tear* *tear*

The same reasons as most people. I wanted to become a vegetarian because I didn't like the idea of killing animals for every meal, I'm an animal lover all in all. And then when I did more research on becoming a vegetarian, I found out some pretty disgusting facts about meat that kept me off of it. It's still tempting on occasion though, eight months and going strong.

I realized eating dead animals is really gross.
