Why do some vegetarians think its okay to eat fish?!

Question:

Why do some vegetarians think its okay to eat fish?

Sort of explains itself...

Answers:
As others have said, there are levels of vegetarianism. Some have names, others don't. I don't eat marshmallows because they have gelatin in them, but my little sister does. I don't really think that eating fish and chicken is vegetarian, but others have different opinions. People who eat fish are pescovegetarians, and chicken eaters are called pollovegetarians. People who eat eggs are ovo-vegetarians, and those who eat dairy products are lacto-vegetarians. The most popular form of vegetarianism is those who eat eggs and dairy, ovo/lacto vegetarians. Then there are total vegetarians, those who eat no meat, eggs, or dairy, and even stricter are vegans, who also avoid things like wool and honey. It's a personal choice of what to eat based on your beliefs.

Also, to more directly answer your question, I can offer a theory. I have a friend who eats fish, and no other meats. She doesn't consider herself a vegetarian, but says she is one in restaurants and such to avoid having to answer a bunch of questions. Maybe you have encountered people like this.

i dunno i don't eat fish and i'm a vegetarian and i know a few people who claim to be vegetarians and eat chicken? don't understand that either

well talkin veggy here.. its not its stupid fish have family homes and are alive just like other animals thats just a stereotype i think

Because there are different levels of vegetarianism. There are vegetarians who don't eat red meat. There are vegans who don't eat any meat at all & there are lacto-ova's. They don't eat any products made from animals including milk, eggs or anything containing those products. It gets too technical, so they are all grouped into one group called vegetarians.

I'm not a vegetarian, but people who claim to be vegetarians and eat fish or chicken aren't really vegetarians. But I'm pretty sure most people do it because they need more protein or iron or more nutrients that they can't get from vegetables alone. Can I have ten points please?!

because fish is not considered meat

they are called pesco-vegetarians. they only eat sea-food.

"It's okay to eat fish because they don't have any feelings"

if you eat fish that's not vegetarian - that's all there is to it

Yes its sort of a choice you make i know many vegetarians that eat fish just like some vegans may eat honey!!
=)

I am a vegetarian, and I don't eat fish, but I'm not a vegan. I think that some vegetarians eat fish because it's considered poultry, not meat.

There are, as previously stated, many level of vegetarianism; they each do have their own titles (those that eat fish being pescatarians) but most people (including some in the category) aren't aware of them so they are grouped under a general vegetarian label. As for vegans and lacto/ovo's mentioned above -- vegans don't eat animals or animal products (eggs, dairy, etc.) lacto-vegetarians do not eat eggs, but they do consume milk products, and ovo-vegetarians are just the opposite.

There's a comedian who thinks the reason why vegitarians will eat fish and not Lamb, Cow, or Pork is because fish are ugly.
I tend to agree.

because technically fish isn't meat...its fish

They are misinformed.

The problem with most humans is that when they decide to become vegetarian, they are usually someone who comes from a diverse meat eating diet. When this is so, it is hard for them to adapt a complete veggie diet, as they still have a love for at least one sort of meat in particular. I remember when I first gave up meat, I found it hard to give up red meat as that was my favourite sort. But now, through determination I have overcome it and now am not so attracted to it as I have now come to understand the processes of what goes into making that beef patty, so I don't feel as attracted to it and I can walk past BBQ's held and feel queasy at the sight of it!

I think its mainly just misinformation. When I first became a vegetarian, I ate fish and seafood on occaision too. It wasnt until I got more into it and did some research on it that I found out that vegetarians do not eat fish. I went through the pescatarian stage, then eventually became completely veggie, bordering on vegan. I just dont think its common knowledge until you are pretty deep into the lifestyle. It was many people on yahoo answers that quite rudely pointed out my error-I simply didnt know.

I don't understand it either. It makes absolutely no sense to say that there are many levels to vegetarianism, which is the eating of anything that isn't the flesh of an animal, and say that one or two of those levels involves eating FLESH!!! I call anyone that claims to be a veg*n and states they occasionally eat fish/chicken/other flesh a POSER!!! They are still omnivores.

Fish are ANIMALS.
Isn't that what the whole point of becoming a vegetarian all about!?
To NOT eat animals?

Some people are misinfomed about what a vegetarian really is, they truely beleive fish is ok to eat. Other people do not see fish as meat. While others are under the impression that fish have some special nutrients that they can only get in fish, and the list goes on and on.

I think the biggest confusion comes from the made up term pescovegitarian. I find that a lot of teenagers like to call temselves this. Its if they need the recognition that they are doing something right/special, but do not want to fully commit(same with the people that think eating chicken is acceptable as well)

Go figure! They obviously aren't veggie for moral issues... xx

They can eat whatever they like but shouldn't call themselves vegetarians if they eat fish.

not all veggiet's go vegetarian for animal issues, some go for diet which in the diet case is only eleminating meats...
I think lol... it sounds reasonable!
