Vegan Tortillas?!
Vegan Tortillas?
So the last time I made (only time) tortillas was about 7 years ago in a cooking class I had. Did pretty well, but seemed like a lot of work. I would like to know any brands of tortillas that are vegan that anyone has found and where they might have found them...or if there is someone here who has 'experience' making tortillas (not just a recipe pulled from the internet) I'd love their recipe and any tips like if I can freeze homemade tortillas and how long I could expect them to last. Thanks a bunch :) -VC

Hi there,
I buy tortillas at supermarkets here in the UK- always their own brand and organic.
The other (popular) brands are usually long-life and contain all kinds of nasties, and are also vegetarian but not vegan.
I don't know about freezing tortillas but I think you can freeze them for up to 3 months at least.
EDIT:
Look, these are the ones I use:

the label states they are vegan and freezable :-D
They are very yummy and sometimes when I am hungry but lazy I just use them like pancakes (crepes) - spread jam or vegan chocolate spread on them and roll them up.
Fresh and Easy Corn Tortillas
2 cups masa harina (Corn flour)
1 1/4 c. warm water
Mix masa flour slowly with warm water until dough holds together well. Divide dough into 12 equal pieces, and shape each into a small ball.
Dip two clean cloths in water and wring dry. Flatten a ball of dough slightly and place between the cloths. Roll with a rolling pin until dough is about 6 inches in diameter.
Heat a griddle to medium-high heat while you cook the corn tortillas.
Pull back cloths slowly, and trim tortilla dough to a round shape. Stack tortillas between sheets of wax paper.
Peel off top piece of waxed paper carefully. Turn over tortilla, paper side up, onto a preheated, ungreased medium-hot griddle. As tortilla starts to warm, the remaining paper should peel right off.
Cook for about 2 minutes, turning frequently, until tortilla looks dry. They are now ready.
The only tortillas I know of are made with lard which is rendered fat. Luck to you in finding Vegan ones.
Many grocery stores carry taco making kits. Apparently the Taco Bell soft taco kit (which would include tortillas and sauce etc.) is vegan according to the Peta's Accidentally Vegan list.
http://www.peta.org/accidentallyvegan/ve...
Also on there is the Old El Paso No-Fuss Fajita Dinner Kit.
The list is not updated often enough, so check the ingredients. Also, if you see something on the package that would seem non-vegan, just email the company (Kraft) and they will tell you for sure. Many companies are switching to vegetable based sources for ingredients (like mono&di's) that used to be animal based. You now have about a 50/50 chance nowadays. I always get prompt replies when I email companies.
Good luck
When I lived in the States, I don't recall ever having a problem finding vegan tortillas. I usually used a whole grain spelt version, but that was just a personal preference, not my only option. Here in the UK, I use Sainsbury's brand, which is vegan, but not whole grain. :-( You should just check out what your local supermarket has to offer. They should have at least one vegan option. If not, try a natural foods shop.
Our favorite are the Ezekiel 4:9 tortillas by 'Food For Life'
Below is their link so you can check out the tortillas and their other products.
here is a recipe for flour tortillas...I have not tried them..but the website seems to be a good one...
Flour Tortillas
(Makes 12)
Here is a recipe for tortillas that was adapted from Simply Simpatico: A Taste of New Mexico.
4 cups flour, all purpose or 1/2 all purpose and 1/2 whole wheat
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
4 T shortening, margarine and Crisco both work
1 1/2 cup warm water, may vary with the flour used
Combine the dry ingredients, then cut in shortening. Make a small well in the center and gradually add water. Knead the dough until it is soft, smooth and elastic. Set aside 10 minutes, then divide into 12 equally sized balls. Roll balls into 1/8 inch thick circles, and cook on a preheated, ungreased grill for about 2 minutes a side, until the tortilla is lightly speckled. Cover to keep warm.

Maybe you can get them on a vegan totilla tree farm in Mexico. Are you really that helpless. How about I teach you to make vegan ice?
Can't you just read the ingredients and see if they're made with animal fat?
