UK government plan to make population go vegetarian or vegan...?!
UK government plan to make population go vegetarian or vegan...?
Something I read today in the newspaper:
An official from the Environmental Agency, a UK government advisory body, proposes to encourage Brits to give up eating meat by way of a "gradual change" to avoid a risk of "alienating the public". Reasons given for this policy were in sympathy for the environmental benefits of a mass switch to a vegan diet and on the basis that it could make a major contribution to slowing climate change - "The potential benefit of a vegan diet in terms of climate impact could be very significant".
I imagine also a reduction in costs for the National Health Service especially with an aging population - e.g. incidents of heart disease, diabetes, etc, would be lessened.
Also added was "Certainly encouraging people to examine their consumption of animal protein could be a key message".
This is an amazing and bold proposal from a government agency. I wonder how such a policy may be gradually implemented and popularised. What do you think?
Answers:
A government could attempt to throw heavy taxing onto land used to farm animals in the name of harming the ecosystem around it. Simple idea and I could probably brainstorm some more but I'm burned out tonite =). I'd move to UK so fast..I bet UK would have an incoming surge of a couple million americans if they ever started such a proposal moving..
I think that is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. I am vegan myself, but what you eat or don't eat is your own personal choice. The UK has been on the road to this kind of government tyranny for awhile now. I, for one, am glad I don't live there and I hope that closet socialists like Al Gore and Hillary Clinton don't start the US down the same path.
Why all the thumbs down on my answer? Do you guys actually LIKE the idea of the government controlling what you eat and how you live your life?
less meat = more healthier person
people only need to eat less meat, thats all. I'm a vegeterian and sometimes I can feel the lack of meat.
It is nobody's plan, from what I understand, it is a recommendation that was out there for a long time. Here is UK govt's own page and what it really says. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/environmenta...
They were of course very careful not to mention the word "vegan", which is too radical I guess. But it is quite clear that veganism would fit in quite well in what they recommend, as they bring up enviromental issues resulting from the production of meat and dairy products and benefits of plant food. Exploitation of the fish is also mentioned. Buying fresh, seasonal organic fruit and vegs is recommended.
This is not some new plan to convert people, just a reasonable recommendation that is suffocated by the meat and dairy industry.
what happened to freedom of choice?
awesome. Hey, i want to kill everybody. Damn, not possible.......what happened to freedom of choice?
It's highly logical. Eating animal products causes more damage than all car usage in the world. Are you people really this ignorant?
