I want to be vegetarian, but I still feel bad about eating dairy?
The problem is, for me, I've always been a big dairy fan, and I know that there are many unhealthy things in animal byproducts (especially those fed with chemicals), but...
are they really that bad. I would like to get them from better sources (like grass fed animal milk), but in the city that is hard and too expencive...

So you need to decide which lifestyle is best for you; vegetarian or vegan. Vegetarians still eat dairy, but no meat. Some vegetarians include fish, while others are strict about NO meat. Vegans do not eat any animal products; milk, cheese, sour cream, yogurt, meats or fish. Vegans typically get there dairy from soy based products and protein from other sources than meat, such as beans. You need to determine level of compromise and conviction and that will lead you to your answer...we all have different levels of food intake and tolerance needs. Good Luck!
I was sent an article some years ago about milk.
When a cow naturally would wean her calf, her milk would normally stop flowing, just like most mammals. Humans are the only mammal that keeps drinking milk after it is weaned, by choice.
Would it help you to know that a huge amount of the milk in the carton that we buy and get from sources, organic, grain or grass fed, or whatever, is almost all pus? That one worked for me. I'd cite you the findings, but kept it in the files only for so long. You may be able to find some info. on this phenomena on the web.
Another good source about the detrimental effect of dairy on the human physiology is a book I remember from the 70's -Mucusless Diet by Arnold Ehret.
Good luck.
There are a lot of healthy and tasty dairy alternatives. These days, you can find them in most maor gorcery stores, not just health food stores.
There are soy cheeses in a variety of flavors, and nothing beats a good bowl of cereal with Silk brand Very Vanilla Soymilk. Tofutti makes a great "cream cheese" spread for bagels. Earth Balance is a healthy non-dairy margarine.
Good luck in your quest to avoid dairy!
I am a vegetarian who is quickly moving towards a more vegan diet. I love cheese - I really do! And sour cream and butter and creamy soups and ice cream and all kinds of dairy. But, earlier this year I vowed to start paying more attention to what I put in and on my body and in the research I've done since then I am having a very hard time continuing with dairy products. They just don't make sense. And they're gross. And anyone who abstains from meat for ethical reasons just CAN'T eat dairy or they're being hypocritical. The dairy industry is NOT cow friendly, even if they're organic. If there were any way to justify continuing to eat cheese I would find it, but so far I can find no positive to eating anything from a cow.
My reccomendation would be to first go vegetarian, then worry about dairy.
At least you're doing something :]
They have Horizon organic brand in most grocery stores and even wal mart. Annies has really yummy mac and cheese dinners that are all organic.
I don't think that milk is as good for people as we are made to think it is...
I was a big dairy fan too... It wasn't easy to give up... but I did... and now I don't even miss it... honest :]
I used to think, "wow I really want that mac and cheese"... and now I think, "wow... that mac and cheese is filled with pus and bacteria and hormones and everything else I can't bare to even think about"... and then I go , "ew nevermind, pass me the peas and carrots" :]

That's some gross stuff about milk...
There are so many non-dairy alternative to dairy. Go to Wholefoods and you can find non-dairy cheeses, sour cream, cream cheese, milk, ice creams etc. There is no need to feel deprived when there are so many non-dairy alternatives available.
