How do vegans in northern climates get vitamin D?!
How do vegans in northern climates get vitamin D?
Your body does not sufficiently supply vitamin D all year around in northern climates and just about all vitamin D that is supplemented is from pig hide and just about all natural sources are from other animals... do you just eat lots of shitake mushrooms?
Does this prevent you from taking mulitvitamins that include vitamin D?
Or are some vegans not that strict?

I'm guessing fortified soy milk is one of the ways they get it. I don't think it's too much of a massive heath issue among the population though.
The derivatives of Vitamin D (D's.. 1-5) as well as what is needed or helpful to the absorption of Vitamin D is not as you have described .. There are two major forms of Vitamin D ..D2 and D3 ..the later being the more important .. You absorb D3 from UVB radiation (THE SUN) and your body being able to process it ..When the sun's rays penetrate your epidermis layers ( your skin ) a photochemical process begins in the which Vitamin D3 is produced in your skin..(your largest organ) .. A minimum of ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure , twice a week to even your face, arms, hands will give you a sufficient amount of rays to get the required Vitamin D .. If you are darker skin you need a bit more..This is really easy for most people to do .. If you can't Soy milks and cereals are fortified with it coming from the fungal or plant source .. .. The diseases associated with lack of Vitamin D as a rule never apply to vegetarians or Vegans.. Last the animal source is not considered the best source by any means ..
I live in Sweden and just because we dont have hot days all year it doesnt mean that the sun isnt shining here. :) I love fresh air and long walks. There are many sunny winter days here, I really dont feel any need to worry about vitamin D, as long as I go out in the daylight.
I'm on a healthy, varied vegan diet. Prefer natural, fresh and homemade. I try to avoid processed stuff... Only suppl I take is B12. I feel absolutely great, no deficiencies what-so-ever. :)
Thats crazy you act like the sun never comes out up here. Yeah its cold but there is still sunshine.
I live in Minnesota. I pretty much get my Vitamin D from the sunshine and fortified products. Even though it is cold up here at times, there still is plenty of sun.
Anyways, the Vitamin D in milk is added too, just like in soymilk.
