Confusion over Vitamin D production...?!
Confusion over Vitamin D production...?
A posted a question much earlier about how do vegans in northernly climates get enough vitamin D? Almost all answers assumed I don't know about norther climates and there is enough sunshine in northern climates all year long to produce vitamin D.
I'm Canadian. Length of days through out the year, intensity of sunshine and amount of skin exposed is not always enough for sufficient vitamin D production.
Season, geographic latitude, time of day, cloud cover, smog, and sunscreen affect UV ray exposure and vitamin D synthesis. Sunlight exposure from November through February in Boston is insufficient to produce significant vitamin D synthesis in the skin.

In Canada, vitamin D synthesis in the skin is absent during the winter months (October to March),

How do vegans in northern climates get enough vitamin D without suppl from animal sources?

Thanks Katie! That site is very good! I'm glad to know that there are non-animal source supplements for vegans in northern climates who might need it. Once I found out how much vitamin D comes from pig hide, then started to look at everything that is fortified with vitamin D in grocery stores (at least here) it made me wonder... But obviously vegans can be healthy here, so I interested to know how they did it!
Thanks again!

Well I live in Arizona so obviously this isn't a problem here, but I did look into what you were saying and found this page :

Was actually an interesting read. So I guess people in the northern most climates should make sure to take vegan supplements (made from fungi) or eat plenty of fortified foods.
:)
Why take a chance? Take a suppliment.
You can stimulate vitamin d production by spending limited time and skin exposure in a tanning both or UV lamps. I do it and I am also from Canada. If I don't do it I have less energy, my sleep cycle is severely disrupted and I get SAD. 10 minutes twice a day in front of my light is enough to survive me through the winter. I still love it when the sun begins shining through again.
Supplements are poor replacements for your bodies natural production and I have found that they don't work for me.
best of luck
the vitamin d-3 is animal source, be sure you also don't use white-out,gelatin capsules, lanolin, honey, wool, obviously leather.
If I tell you , 15 minutes a day without anything on your eyes with the sun on your face, could you get that? You'll get 40,000 iu of vitamin D. It acts like a fish hook and grabs calcuim to build your bones and other
requirements for calcium.
I have other sources ,that if you contact me I will give you. As simple as adding to your daily water intake.
