Am I not being a true vegetarian?!
Am I not being a true vegetarian?
I am taking an Amino Acid supplement that come to find out contains Gelatin. Am I not being a true vegetarian, or just not a vegan?
Answers:
Gelatin is not vegetarian. Unless the supplement was marked "vegetarian gelatin", you must assume that it was meat based gelatin. Contrary to the answer given earlier, Kosher Gelatin is NOT vegetarian.
Since this is a 'choice' for you to take this supplement (not mandatory for you living), and you now know it contains meat, if you continue to take it, you technically wouldn't be vegetarian any more.
I've found that most supplements are available in a Vegetarian form. Try doing an internet search to see if you can locate one. I use http://www.iherb.com for my veggie CoQ10.
Hope this helps. : )
just not a vegan because it does not have meat in it!!
"Vegetarians" meaning the ones who actually eat animal products, such as dairy and eggs, avoid gelatin, meat (including fish flesh and chicken flesh), meat broths, lard, and rennet.
I'd say you consumed an animal product by accident, so you are still a vegetarian. I would give the supplement to someone else that would use it and purchase one that did not contain gelatin, or you could finish your current supply so it won't be wasted.
In my opinion, people who are not true vegetarians are those who claim the title, but say they still eat seafood or chicken occassionaly. That doesn't make sense to me.
Eat meat, it is why we evolved.
I think it's fine that you eat gelatin if you are a vegetarian but not if you are a vegan
Vegetarianism is the practice of not consuming the flesh of any animal (including sea animals) with or without also eschewing other animal derivatives, such as dairy products or eggs[1]. Some vegetarians choose to also refrain from wearing clothing that has involved the death of animals, such as leather, silk and fur.
Veganism excludes all animal products from diet and attire, whether or not their production has involved the actual death of an animal (dairy, eggs, honey, wool, silk and down feathers). Vegetarians have varied motivations including religious, cultural, ethical, environmental, social, economic, and health concerns.
We were meant to eat meat, that's what the K9 teeth are for. If we were meant to eat plants and be vegeterians we would all be walking around looking like Brantosaurouses
Gelatin is not vegetarian.
I'm really confused at the moment- I've recently become vegetarian- and am finding it difficult to give up my favourite foods like sweets etc.
I have a similar problem in that I want to take omega-3 and vegetarian supplements are very expensive. I'm going to find other sources- like sesame seeds though.
However- gelatin is made of animal bones. Animal bones are useless in most cases- they take ages to rot and aren't eaten. So I see it more as a bi-product of a cruel industry.
I currently refuse to eat gelatine- but a tiny bit in a supplement that will benefit your well being- I don't think is too bad. It really is your choice- whether you feel guilty or not.
I think I may extend my diet to include gelatine eventually- because I currently am not really sure if it is cruel to eat it or not.
Why so hung up on the vegetarian label? Gelatin contains the by-product of the meat industry. If you are okay contributing money to that industry than you can do whatever yu want. If you are a vegetarian for health reasons then a little gelatin won't hurt you. There are no hard and fast rules for this. Do what your conscience allows you to do. Personally, I don't like the meat industry and I try to avoid helping them make ANY money, not even off their scraps.
It is likely that the gelatin is what the capsule is made of and there's a chance that the gelatin is kosher (and doesn't contain animal by-product. Why don't you call the company and ask them the source? Explain why you want to know and maybe, if they're buying cruel gelatin they'll make a switch!
It's impossible to say. Gelatin can be made from animals or synthesized from ammino acids. Most of the gelatin you can purchase is synthesized, it is cheaper that way.
I consider myself a vegetarian even though i eat shellfish and honey. I don't like the taste or smell of meat at all.
You're going to give yourself a headache if you don't eat a complete protein.
Well, now that you know it has gelatin will you still take it?
Vegetarians do not eat gelatin,if you don't know, gelatin is boiled animal bones and skin.
Not vegetarian, as an animal had to die for you to get that gelatin. I know there are "vegetarians" who still consume some animal products, such as dairy & eggs, but even the "lacto-ovo" would not consider any food derived from a dead animal as acceptable.
Hey "evolutionists" & canine-teeth obsessors, if you put a piece of fruit & a live bunny in front of a 2-year-old carnivore, such as a tiger, it's obvious what it would eat. Then if humans are natural carnivores, a human 2-year-old should do the same thing...do you really think a 2-year-old would willingly kill & eat the bunny? Humans eat meat due to social conditioning, not natural tendencies.
