Vegetarian omega 3 capsule?!
Vegetarian omega 3 capsule?
I'm a veggie- and I'm trying to establish a balanced diet. How many calories in a vegetarian omega 3 capsule?
Alternatively:
How many grams of omega 3 do I need a day?
I'm thinking sesame seeds, eggs and walnuts would be good too- but I don't know how much to eat to get enough.
Answers:
I buy organic flax seed oil capsules at Costco and take 2 daily. I think it's 15 calories per capsule...will try to remember to look when I get home and post that info.
I'm a non-vegetarian that gets his omega 3's from a veg source. Get organic flaxseed oil. You can get the capsules from any health food store as well as a lot of websites such as www.puritan.com www.gnc.com or www.mothernature.com
You're calorie counting on a vegetarian diet??
Just eat til you're not hungry any more, and you should be fine.
Most of the research on Omega 3 says that the amount you need depends on who you are. It's also essential to get the balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 correct.
There's varied evidence that supplements can be completely useless and that you should get your Omega 3 direct from foods... But I should think that if you're eating a fairly balanced diet that is only lacking in Omega 3, taking supplements should be fine.
If you're getting enough wholegrains, fresh fruit & vegetables, nuts and seeds - you're probably getting enough.
Just to make it all easier for you; tofu has alpha-linolenic acid in it, which can become omega 3 fatty acid in the body. So keep up your tofu and soya bean intake too.
There's a few good links below that show tables of who needs Omega 3, how much different people should consume and why a balanced intake of Omega 3 is best.
Unless you have a diagnosed heart condition, I wouldn't worry too much about how much Omega 3 you get. Vegetarians probably fare the best for Omega 3 consumption, except of course for those fish-eaters .. but then - they have mercury to worry about.
The Mediterranean diet is one of the most healthiest in the world! Fish has omega 3!!!! Eat fish!
