Under attack with Allergies...?!
Under attack with Allergies...?
I had a dinner party last month, in which a few vegetarian friends were invited. As per usual, I prepared meated and meatless dishes for my guests, being sure not to cross over anything. One of my friends brought his new vegan girlfriend, so I actually made the vegetarian dishes vegan...
The girl near well took my head off for having her food on the same table as meat! Not only that she swore at me in my own home for eating meat myself, her boyfriend, my friend said to her (amongst other things) "she can't be a healthy vegetarian, she has to many food allergies!"
This girl responded that "allergies are of no concern to me, that doesn't justify killing something"...
Her behaviour aside, I'm wondering how many vegetarians and vegans would still be so if you could not be healthy doing it?
Just for interest, so no one asks, I have over 30 food allergies, I'm under going extensive treatment for it. My allergies (the BAD ones) include: Soy, oats, barley, molasses, broccoli, beans...

These allergies do not cause a runny nose, they cause things like anaphylaxis, migraine, vomitting, hives, asthama attacks, diarhea, etc.

This girl was incredibly rude to you and there is no reason for it, especially since you went out of your way to make vegan dishes for her and your other friends. As a vegan she should already understand that she lives in an omnivore world. When she goes to restaurants does everyone have to order vegan so that there is no meat on her table there as well? I do understand food allergies because I had one to sugar growing up and you can imagine how much fun I had at other kid's birthday parties and it's rediculous to expect you to get sick on tofu for her benefit. Me personally, I don't mind if my veggie food even shares a plate with a meat dish (someone comes in with my grilled hummus wrap on the same plate as the burgers he's been grilling I'll be damned if I'm gonna complain since he took the time to cook me an alternative). It's not like I think meat is poison, I just don't want to support factory farming.
If I couldn't be a vegetarian healthfully...I'm not sure. I am very much against the way farm animals are treated. I think a few allergies could be gotten around, but thirty is a lot, especially to veggie staples like soy and broccoli. I guess it depends on how willing one is to watch his/her diet. I suppose in your situation, I would try to really limit the amount of meat I ate and keep it free-range/cage-free...as they have a slightly better life.
have benadryl, claritin, walitin, or just have lots of fruits, or a nasal spray.
no
Wow...this is kind of neat! I have really, really bad food allergies too, and a lot of them. Just to name a few: eggs, milk, beans, soy, citris fruit, and asparagus. I would rather be a vegan, but I cannot do it healthfully, so I eat meat. I pretty much have to force myself to do it, but I truly cannot be a vegan healthfully.
Your friend's girlfriend was very disrespectful of you, and in a very inappropriate setting!
Health should come first, and I hope you're treatment goes well!
Don't even let that person make you think twice about it. You are doing a great job of trying to accommodate everyone at your dinner party. You made something for everyone you invited according to their likes and dislikes. It is the height of rudeness to come to someone's home and insult their efforts as she did yours. I always figure that if someone is rude and doesn't associate with you anymore, then great. Both are better off not being around each other.
As far as the allergies, it is hard to find enough to eat sometimes and you just do the best you can to be healthy and prevent more allergies from developing. I think anyone with food allergies is glad to eat meats or veggies, or both, depending on how it affects them. Sometimes beggars can't be choosers, as the old saying goes. Obviously, the girl does not have any concept of how hard it is to cope with extreme food allergies. You were a thoughtful hostess and didn't deserve her disrespect.
That GF was just an ***. Sorry, but that's my opinion. I am a vegetarian willingly, but probably not if my health were to suffer due to vegetarianism. And I most certainly would NOT berate someone else for being who they are. Nor would I force my ideas on anyone, let alone a new BF's friend! As I said, the stupid little GF was just an ***.
Hey, I think that is really lousy of her to treat you that way. When my best friend has me over, she makes me vegan dishes, and!!! since about 4 others are vegetarian she makes those on top of it!! I would never say a word to her about allowing my food to be near meat. After all, some of the things I buy in the grocery stores can be found right next to meat!!! Besides that, wow..thats just bad bad manners. But to answer your question regarding vegetarians with allergies, I do have a ge friend who is allergic to wheat and soy and has been a vegetarian for quite a few years. She is even a yoga instructor!!!So needless to say, even with her allergies she does manage to stay healthy, and happy at that..She is probably one of the nicest people Ive met! :)
well itd be hard, but i dont believe impossible.
yeah her behavior aside, she sounds realllly rude.
health is one of everyone attack at why not to be vegetarian.
so I think weve all found ways to be healthy with it.
if it made me unhealthy, id still do it, i care for the animals and there rights.
i learned during a seminar of a man who died instead of eating meat, its just how much your willing to do.
That womans behavior is outrageous! How dare she talk to you like that in your own home. I am allergic (ANA) to wheat, soy, eggs, commercial dairy, soy, peanuts, and other things that I react badly to, but not anaphalactic, so I know how challenging it can be to maintain a vegetarian diet, but I manage to. I have to rotate foods often, and cannot eat a food again for 4 days after I have it, or I develop an allergic reaction to it as well. You sound like a wonderful hostess, and I feel bad that this ignorant woman ruined it for you., Invite me next time-I will sing your praises! lol
I have food allergies and cannot live on a vegan diet. Deal with your allergies as your doctor advises, and don't worry about such an insensitive b***h. You tried to be hospitable, and as far as I'm concerned you were more than hospitable. She was immature, insensitive, and arrogant. Never invite her back into your home, and make sure your friend knows why she's not welcome. This girl has issues and needs to learn her actions have consequences.
