Incorporating meat back into a (once) vegetarian diet?!

Question:

Incorporating meat back into a (once) vegetarian diet?

Many vegetarians I have talked to have told me that eating meat makes them very sick. What is the pathophysiology of the problem? Do your digestive enzymes change after not eating meat for a prolonged time? What changes occur in your body after not eating meat after a prolonged period?

Answers:
The body never loses its ability to digest animal protein, but some vegetarians I know who ate meat once or twice says it made them constipated and a little nauseas. Here's a response to the question from a dietitian.

In my opinion, it's a psychological thing. I can't see how it can make anyone sick....but I'm no expert on vegetarian diet.

Maybe it's just in the mind.

When a friend of mine decided to go back to a meat diet, she became ill. It was almost like a 24-hour bug, nothing major, but I think it is because you're just not used to eating meat and it can make you sick.
It can't be physiological. If a vegan or vegetarian willingly eats meat again how could that make them sick?

I had a friend get awfully sick and had severe diarrheas from accidentally eating bacon that was in her salad.

I really don't know why. Maybe you're stomach just isn't used to breaking down the meat also it may be psychological.

All I know is that I went off the veggie wagon with a huge slice of medium-rare prime rib, and I was not a happy camper the next day! It did NOT make me very sick, just extremely uncomfortable...it sure set my digestive system rumbling! lol!

Its not a psychological thing. My friends mother prepared me vegetable minestrone soup. Apparently she thought it was a tomato broth but it was a beef broth. About 20 minutes later that soup was coming out both ends. Her mom is a nurse so she thought it might be an allergic reaction. That is when we noticed the beef broth. I was fine the next day so it wasn't a stomach virus. My body reacted to the soup and i had no clue i had consumed meat.

I made the transition from vegetarian back to omnivore with no physical effects whatsoever. So the best we can conclude from all these responses is that different people respond differently.

I know I couldn't do it. I couldn't digest meat before I stopped eating it so now, it would be impossible. My stomach won't handle it.
