The way you comb your hair is a personal choice?!

Question:

The way you comb your hair is a personal choice?

The way you comb your hair is a personal choice. The movie you rent is a personal choice. The person you date is a personal choice. However, and this is big HOWEVER, eating animals is not a personal choice. It is murder and to call it anything else is a straight out lie!

Am I alone on this way of thinking? Surely someone else agrees with me. How can we convince the meat eaters that what they are doing is wrong?

Answers:
Ashley, you are not alone on this way of thinking - I agree with you completely!

When someone says "people are free to choose what they want to eat", this shows how small-minded they are. They want all the rights - but never think even for a second that animals have a right to be free.

Many also choose not to want to know how the vast majority of animals used for food and clothing are bred and slaughtered.

Many believe the tv and other commercials about how healthy milk is and that we will surely die in great sickness if we don't have milk... cow's milk. But how many of those have ever thought why on earth would a human or an animal ever drink other species' milk beyond infancy?

It is true that some animals eat other animals. But they will very often, if not generally, prey sick, slow animals. Of course there are exceptions, but that is what they are - EXCEPTIONS.

However, animals will NEVER enslave other animals or subject them to torture like humans do. They will also NEVER kill for sport. They will only kill to survive.

Oh, what double standards people have...

May I also use this space to tell those, who claim that they are saving plants by eating meat, that much much more plant food is needed to "produce" meat than to feed a human directly.

Oh, and one more thing.
If there are any vitamins/substances that are only found in meat, this does NOT mean that one has to eat meat to get these substances. It means that our bodies will produce these substances, just like animals' bodies have.

Thank you, Ashley, for helping to open people's eyes.

don't worry where we fail
the Government will force on them.
see link below.

i've been a veggie for over 12 years & never going back.

Stop it and I will take you to the European Court for infringing my Human Rights. You can always offer yourself up as a sacrifice instead of the animals, are you better with tomato or brown sauce?

You probably aren't alone in this but if you are a teenager or someone who has just started college or university, you are suffering from a very common syndrome. The syndrome is one all young people suffer, an incredible rage that they can't find a source for so find a "cause" to vent their spleen. Sorry to burst a cloud but it is true.

i think ur rite they r poor and innocent animals y don't u orgonise a protest or sumthing and more reasons y not 2 eat animals there got 2 be other ppl hoo will stop eating animals afterwards! hopefully this helps

I AGREE WITH NUTSTERS ANSWER

Because in the bible, people eat meat and their are many devout religions who have no problem that God had no problem with it. Now the way they are butchered is horribly wrong and is probably why so many people get sick from eating meat. Mankind has always been meat eaters since the invention of the ability to make fire. Hunters and gatherers since our cavedwelling times.

You need protein in your body. If you get it from beans and soy good for you, but some people feel that meat is essential and not a sin.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the definition of murder is the unlawful killing of a human being. You can't murder animals because they aren't humans. Nor is it unlawful to kill animals, provided they are killed within the regulations set forth by local, state and federal governments.

You may believe that killing animals is unethical, which is a valid opinion. I think many of the ways we raise and kill animals is unethical, but it still isn't murder.

Don't listen to the guy above me he dose not know what he is talking about!!! I think that eating animals is murder but what they eat is THERE choice not yours to make for them!l am a veggie have been one for 2 years and l will never eat meat again but that is my choice not yours we live in a free country so let them make there own choices!!!!

I totally agree with you- meat is murder. More people should be encouraged to turn vegetarian because its more healtheir and more importantly animals dont have to suffer in pain for our hunger.

Actually, it is a personal choice. People CHOOSE to eat meat PERSONALLY. You PERSONALLY choose not to eat meat.

I don't agree with eating meat, that is my personal opinion.

You can't.
You can be a role model, and lead by example, and you can offer them a different viewpoint, but you can't legislate or force morality. There are many issues like this, such as abortion, racism, environmentalism, etc, where BOTH sides fervently believe they are right and that they must convince the other side to change.

Try reading the Hua Hu Ching by Lao Tzu, the translation by Brian Walker. It may help you come to peace with this issue.

I am a vegetarian and I think pushing your beliefs on other people is wrong. I know a lot of slaughtering practices and the way some animals are forced to live are wrong, but in nature animals eat each other. It is perfectly natural for humans to eat meat. Also plants are ALIVE, until we murder them. Something has to be sacrificed for us to sustain life, its just a personal choice whether its animals or plants. I think the rise in free range and organic meats (and veggies) is refreshing, at least people are moving toward change and starting to think about what they put into their bodies. If people want to eat meat its their arteries being clogged, not yours, so chill out.

I don't agree with you. Eating meat is a personal choice, just like being a vegetarian is a personal choice. I am a vegetarian, and I choose to be one. This would be the reason why meat eaters don't get along with veggies, because people like you judge them, and in return they judge us. However that's not the only reason at times we are disliked, lets just say your not helping.

When we can convince the government that taxes are wrong.

NOUN:
1. The unlawful killing of one human by another, especially with premeditated malice.
2. Slang Something that is very uncomfortable, difficult, or hazardous: The rush hour traffic is murder.
3. A flock of crows. See Synonyms at flock 1.

The only way that having an omnivorous diet is murder is definition #2, and that is because you are uncomfortable with the omnivores choice. Get over it. You are not going to win anyone over to your way of thinking if you continue to act in this manner, as told to you many times by the users in this section, including others who share your vegetarian diet choice.

Don't convince them they are wrong..help those who want help.

Think of it on a fundamental level.

If you had two people hanging from a cliff dropping 500 feet below..and one guy said "ew, don't touch me your vegan, go find me a meat eater to rescue me" and the other guy said "I'm have no argument to you helping me, just pull me up." It makes it very easy to decide. This is essentially what goes on here.

Grab the guys hand who is more worried bout learning how to make the best choices for himself and others and don' waste your time with the guy who is only worried about being 'right.' or else you'll be no better then that person and never accomplish as much as you could otherwise.

With that being said..here's a dose of hypocrisy because I'm in a cranky mood.

Jim - First off you've been reported. Secondly I doubt you care about any rights if you're so easy to resort to slander. Third humans have no more rights then animals. The rights we have are arbitrary and within the context of our societies.. with this in mind the governments of the world dictate these and yes they can infringe any of your previous rights if bills are passed into laws.

Sean F - Sorry to burst your cloud. Just because in your past you chose to vicariously live through the beliefs and the people that held them around you in a temporary pose doesn't mean everyone else did or continues too.

Tom W - Murder has many meanings. Tell yourself what you need too but: your mom on a plate and a cow on a plate.. you'd have no idea! Flesh is flesh.
# To kill (another human) unlawfully.
# To kill brutally or inhumanly.
# To put an end to; destroy
# To spoil by ineptness; mutilate

For the rest of you, go choke on a bird flu infected piece of veal - you deserve no better in your current opposition to compassion.

Note to veganconscript (note spelling).

I don't think that veal can be infected with bird flu as veal is not a type of avian species. Last time I checked it was an Bos taurus.
So how about "Go choke on a mad cow infected piece of veal"?

Oh, that's not true! There are lots of animals who are raised to be food.
Says to eat meat in the Bible, fer cryin' out loud! Not doing anything wrong if I follow the rules that are in the Bible.

keep combing your hair any way you like and let me kill my next meal

That is highly unlikely, especially with the ignorant ones.
I don't believe in telling them what to do-eventually more and more tainted meat recalls will occur and that in itself should be enough.

I notice 2 answers by "veganconscript", yet that's not possible.
The first answer by veganconscript appears legit, while the 2ND looks like the work of a mindless, lifeless, ignorant imposter.
Also note that the 2ND "veganconscript" has a new account.
And then, what a coincidence--look who answers immediately after?!
Assuming the profile of another?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's a violation...

You're not alone, and in this particular section you're preaching to the choir.
But talking that way to meat-eaters will get you exactly nowhere. You'll just make them feel attacked and they will either get defensive or offensive, but you will convince no one.

I'm 34 and I've done much in my life that was wrong: that much I know full well. The wrongness of things I do operates on a sliding scale however and my cruelty to other people is at the top whilst my causing murder of animals is somewhere near the bottom. When I gave up Veganism, it was to rejoin the human race, which in general is cruel and selfish in its' behaviour despite all its' good intentions. I am not joining your crusade although I know where you're coming from. Brand me a bad person if you wish: I alienate plenty enough people already without branding everybody murderers once again.

Apart from the other extremists, I'd say yes you're on your own hun. I'm quite happy being veggie. I like other people to respect that fact. But for me to earn that respect, I also have to respect that for other people, eating meat is the norm. I would not think it any more fair for me to press my views on them, than for them to press their views on me.

In a way, I do not disagree with the killing of animals for food - it is all part of the life cycle. You'd be laughed at if for example you started trying to petition lions into not eating baby gazelles because it's cruel. Humans are higher up the food chain and kill other animals to eat, much as carnivores do in the wild. What I DO object to are the standards of living for some animals, the way they are treated, fed and the way in which they are slaughtered. I will ONLY eat free range eggs - I cannot bear the idea of eating eggs from hens kept trapped in tiny cages and defecating all over each other. I would rather eat steak from a cow that has had a good life of grazing in fields, and been killed quickly and humanely, than eat battery eggs.

I support the principal behind fox hunting because it keeps the ecosystem in check across the countryside. I do however disagree with making it into a sport. A fox is killed in seconds by a pack of dogs (however vicious it may look), whereas shooting it may take several minutes, if not hours to kill it.

i love eating beef, lamb, pork, chicken, duck,i love baby cow (veal)
i love pate foi gras..thats where they forcefeed a goose to make its liver huge and tasty.

people like you make me want to vomit......

grow up!

I understand where you're coming from, however, the "meat is murder" argument is the quickest way to turn off meat-eaters from even considering abstaining from meat.

We veg*ns need to keep our eyes on the prize: to effectively persuade meat-eaters to genuinely want to change their ways. Calling them murderers is not an effective way, since they do not view animals as our equals, but as property. Until this p.o.v. is shattered, they will never see meat-eating as wrong.

The best way to start is to tug at their heart-strings w/ info on what happens behind closed doors to these animals e.g., http://www.veganoutreach.org/whyvegan/an... They may ignore accusations of murder, but it's hard to ignore complicity in cruelty. Let them see that being veg*n is about reducing suffering.

Of course there are many other persuasive arguments based on:
-Environmentalism: "A vegan driving a Hummer leaves a smaller carbon footprint than a meat-eater riding a bicycle."
-Humanism/ego/intellectualism: You can turn the whole choice argument around to our favor, making veganism the smart choice: as rational, conscious, thinking beings, we can choose to stop suffering & blindly taking life when we can do better. "True philosophy must start from the most immediate and comprehensive fact of consciousness: 'I am life that wants to live, in the midst of life that wants to live'...you should bring redemption, redemption from the misery brought into the world by self-contradictory will of life, redemption that only he who has this knowledge can bring. The small amount you are able to do is actually much is it only relieves pain, suffering, and fear from any living being, be it human or any other creature. The preservation of life is the true joy." Dr.Albert Schweitzer, Nobel Peace Laureate
-Health: Unhealthy meat: frequent chemical/disease/fecal contamination, toxins, obesity, heart disease, etc.

p.s. to all those biblical answerers: yes, the bible can be interpreted in many different ways, since it is often contradictory (e.g., "eye for an eye" vs. "turn the other cheek"). So, if you want to make this a biblical argument, remember, God supposedly allowed humans to eat meat due to Adam & Eve's fall from grace i.e., SIN. There was no killing & eating of animals in the Garden of Eden, so technically, eating meat is directly related to SIN. Parts of the bible also condone slavery, stoning of children, etc. Don't take it so literally & out of context.

You really need to stop posting this stuff..it takes away from real questions. If you feel so strongly about this, there are many animal rights groups you can join. What you are doing here with your posts is doing more harm then good.

As I said before, murder is a crime laid down in statute, there are NO statute laws referring to animals so you re talking CRAP.

And YES you are alone, and probably should be kept away from normal people in one of those nice asylums.

Think about what you are saying -'eating animals is not a personal choice. It is murder' - its NOT murder to eat them you imbecile, its consumption, and to call it consumption is NOT a lie, read a bloody dictionary.

'How can we convince the meat eaters that what they are doing is wrong?' quite simply - YOU can't.
