It's like fake sugar. I think they're made from sugar base stuff and they add different stuff to it. My grandpa who has diabetes uses them in his coffee instead of actual sugar.

sugar gives you energy,calories & increases the level of blood glucose ,the ability to burn or metabolise this glucose in the blood is lacking in diabetics ,so they are not permitted sugar in their diet,because a high level has many unfortunate effects on the body.To overcome this , as well as for those wanting to reduce weight by cutting down calories ,artificial sweetners are used,these are substances which give a sweet taste but do not act like sugar in other respects.Dried leaves of a plant called Stevia also gives an sweet taste..so could also be called an artificail swetner.
