Doughnuts isnt french though in french its beignet

maybe the difference is english english and american english but i am english and i think we use both too

doughnuts: is the formal (English) spelling and i think its supposed to be 2 parts "dough - nuts"
donuts: is rather the simple unformal (American) spelling

"donuts" sounds lighter and less greasy me, probably because in the US, Krispy Creme sells doughnuts and Dunkin sells donuts.
