Can u drink from a coconut that fell from a palm tree?!

Question:

Can u drink from a coconut that fell from a palm tree?

I was riding my bike and saw a coconut under a palm tree and took it home. It is kinda greenish and I was wondering if it was safe to drink from it.

Answers:
LOL

Well, first of all, you'll have to peel off the green skin to find out whether or not the nut inside is good. Have you got a machete?

Once you get the outer green hull off, you'll have the hard brown nut in your hands. Give it a shake. Does it sound liquid? If so, you may have an edible coconut in your hands. The heavier it is, btw, the better.

One of the three eyes in the top of the nut is softer than the others. Poke a nail through that hole, and open it up. Pour the liquid into a clean glass. If it is bad, it will smell sour. if it is good, it will smell sweet and fresh.

Don't drink it yet.

Once you've got the liquid out, crack open the nut (use a hammer), and peel some of the white flesh away from the nut, if it is bright white and there is no black lines on the nut where the flesh was attached (they look like veins), then it is edible. Enjoy.

If there are black veins... don't eat it!

My husband is Bahamian and taught us how to pick and eat coconuts... Even those that fall from the trees.

umm?

They do it all the time on the tv show "Survivor".

its probably not ready to eat, but the milk should be fine!

Should be safe, is it the husk that is green or the nut? If its the nut I might wait awhile

yeah, sure......

cough, cough....

yes.. of course...shake it to c if their is any liquid in it. its perfectly safe as long as it is a coconut and not something else. then i don't kno....

i remember opening a coconut once and actually eating the white stuff before it had solidified properly... it sort of luks slimy but it is heaven!

Sure. First get rid off that green "shell". Then take a drill and drill a few holes in it in order to get out the coconut "milk" (it is actually more like water but keep that stuff, it is healthy and tastes delicious). Once you have a few holes in it, you can try to break it open with your bare hands or use some tools. If the coconut smells funky in any way you might not want to eat it. The water inside should be milky and almost clear, not yellowish and it should smell like coconut, of course. Enjoy!

Thumbs down for my answer?? Sorry, I am from Germany and I didn't know that the green surrounding is called husk.

You sure can, once you work out how to get the husk off.

Coconut water is the most sterile liquid that you can have. As much the coconut has been perforated by any menas, is all cool.

no

I think it's safe, but I would wait until it gets more ripe. Isn't that just like how you buy coconuts in a grocery store--the people get them from palm trees and the ground around them?

Yes, the liquid inside of the coconut is drinkable.
However, don't go drinking every coconut you find. Too much can give you the runs since the liquid can be a laxative.

Tom Hanks did it in Cast Away..

Absolutely! And its delicious. It is a somewhat acquired taste, and be forewarned that coconut water is a natural laxative. I drank from a coconut every morning when I vacationed in St. Lucia.

you can drink it but to be sure ask a adult to be with you if you decide to eat it

The green part of a coconut is the outer 'shell'. You peel that away to get to the coconut that you're familiar with. If the coconut smells okay, then it's probably okay to eat. If it has a bad smell, don't eat it.

yes drink up!
