How much shrimp should I buy per person?!
How much shrimp should I buy per person?
I am grilling shrimp for dinner of four people. In terms of weight, how much should I buy/prepare per person?
If it were 31-40 count, ten per person would be 1/4 pound plus each. Is that right? Or should I do half a pound?
If they are smaller, do you keep the same weight?
Thanks!
Answers: Recipes that typically feed four people call for 1 pound of shrimp, not matter what the count is per pound. 1/4 pound of shrimp is one serving.
Personally, I think that is being very modest.
I serve my guests 1/2 pound of shrimp. It depends on what else you are making. More is better than less, and if they want they can bring the left overs home. How every you cook them, don't over cook them, 31-40 are small and will cook fast.
Have Fun!!! It is not a simple amount per person thing. It will vary according to what part of the meal the shrimp will be. For example, are they the main course and thus the only protein used? Or are they an appetizer course? Will there be other grilled items such as veggies? You see what I mean? If you are going to use small shrimp such as 31-40 then they are best used as an ingredient in a dish and also they are not good for grilling as their small size makes them prone to dry out very quickly with the dry heat method of grilling. I would use nothing smaller than 18-20 for the grill and with some other grilled items such as squash and peppers with a side of rice pilaf you can have a main entree with about 5 shrimp apiece. Hope this helps you, at the very least gives you some ideas. Well, it depends. What part of the meal are the shrimp? Overall, 1/4 pound per person would be okay, but somewhat on the light side of things. As an example, here's what I did last weekend. I got shrimp that were 21-25, which are a nice size for grilling (the 31-40 are a little small, and will cook very fast, so watch out) and I think make a nice presentation. I made skewers, with 4 shrimp per skewer, with a small slice on onion and pinapple on each. I counted roughly one skewer per person, however I was also serving steaks and many side dishes/desserts. So, that was an accurate way to guess. 4 or 5 large shrimp per person went very well. Best of luck to you.
