Question about milk jugs...?

I was wondering if the one gallon milk jugs containers were originally made just for milk. Now you can get water, OJ, different juices in those containers, but did it originally start as just milk?

I'm talking about the one gallon plastic containers with the handle and the plastic top that you tear off a piece of plastic to open, but can reattach the top for the cover.

But really, I know I am biased but I think my questions are much more interesting and funny.
