Why is store bought ice clear, and homemade ice opaque??
Answers: At home, the water you use has a lot of air dissolved in it. This is what causes the white fogginess in the ice. The water they use for store-bought ice has very little air dissolved in it because of the process they use. It's not because of impurities. The water has less impurities, and undergoes a process of freezing in a factory that results in transparency. It's the purity of the water. If you use hot water to make your ice instead of cold your ice cubes will be clearer. I don't know why -- but it seems to work, especially if you boil first. most stores have ice machines that they scoop there ice out of into bags and sell it to you. your fridge/freezer is not built to specifically make ice. so..fill rate and filtration(for those nifty ice making ones) or clean trays and oxygenation(for those of us who just have a big cold box) can really make a difference.
