Why are the rims of drinking glasses always round?!
Why are the rims of drinking glasses always round?
I mean, seriously, they CAN be square, right?
Answers: The first drinking glasses were round because they were made from hand-blown glass. A round glass was easier to make, and the techniques for molding glass had not been developed. They've stayed round because they are easier to drink from, as several answerers have noted. The round shape forms a semi-funnel, or chute, for the liquid to be poured into the mouth. Round works better, because of the shape of the mouth. Try drinking from the straight edge of a square container and you are more likely to dribble all over yourself. They aren't always round, and yes, there are square ones. Square ones work if you drink out of the corner. i have a square one right in front of me. They're NOT always round. I've seen glasses with an octagonal shaped rim, but anything but round is like trying to drink from a dribble glass. I have a few square ones, and wide round like martini glasses.
good question, I have no reasonable answer, except I like the round the best. they can be square....it's just the shape of the mouth makes it easier to drink with a round glass I have seen square and octaganol ones as well. The corners on these polygons always have large radii on them though. It's hard to drink off of a flat surface unless your mouth is wider than the flat otherwise you're going to get your drink spilling out the sides of your mouth. They aren't always round. I have some octagon shaped glasses that are really easier for small children to drink from than the round ones.
