Can anyone tell me what the HELL is TOFU! Been trying to find it in Tescos. What or where is it????
Answers: It's in the Chiller cabinet, usually with vegetarian ready meals and with the quorn/meat replacement products. It's very flexible and I use it usually in stir fries but don't buy the plain one (it's boring). I always go for the smoked one which is much tastier. Tofu (the Japanese "Romaji" spelling), also called doufu (the Chinese "Pinyin" spelling often used in Chinese recipes) or bean curd (the literal translation), is a food of Chinese origin[1], made by coagulating soy milk, and then pressing the resulting curds into blocks. The making of tofu from soy milk is similar to the technique of making cheese from milk. Wheat gluten, or seitan, in its steamed and fried forms, is often mistakenly called "tofu" in Asian or vegetarian dishes.
You'll find it in the organic section of larger grocery stores or in your local health food market. I think its a sort of Chinese cheese made of soya bean and is used in Chinese cooking. Look in the cheese section or ask an assistant. It's tasteless and it's made from soy milk. My not too well supplied supermarket has it in the fresh vegetable section with the bean sprouts Tofu is mainly soybean. I think its disgusting, mostly because i am a meateater. Ive tried veggie burgers which have Tofu in it and thats composed of soybeans, oats, grains, and vegatables. It kinda tasted like mashed potatos that were spiced. Just checked my fridge for some and discovered its two months out of date so its now in the bin. Purchased mine in the Chinese Supermarket. Try the veggie freezers in tescos might be in there. Cheese.... Tofu is soybean. The soybean is cooked in water and the curd that is left is mixed with a bittern then left to solidify in a square mold in cold water.
Tofu can be found in the oriental foods area in most stores or at specialty food stores anywhere.
To keep uncooked leftovertofu fresh, place tofu into a sealable airtight container and add clean water. Change the water every 2 days and this will prolong the opened pack of tofu for up to another week. Tofu is a food of Chinese origin made by coagulating soy milk, and then pressing the resulting curds into blocks. It it found in Tesco on the Organic Cabinet Provisions shelf Tofu is made from okara, which is the paste created by making soy milk. A coagulant, such as magnesium sulphate is added to firm it up. Most of it is made with genetically modified soy (I personally thing GMO foods are frightning and do not eat them) It sold in firm, soft, or silken forms and is usually with the refrigerated chinese items, such as wonton wrappers. Soya ben curd. Its usually in the fridge. It's easiest to find in health food shops. Although I do recall getting some in a bigger Tescos Tofu, also known as soybean curd, is a soft, cheese-like food made by curdling fresh hot soymilk with a coagulant. Traditionally, the curdling agent used to make tofu is nigari, a compound found in natural ocean water, or calcium sulfate, a naturally occurring mineral. Curds also can be produced by acidic foods like lemon juice or vinegar. The curds then are generally pressed into a solid block.
Tofu is rich in high-quality protein. It is also a good source of B-vitamins and iron. When the curdling agent used to make tofu is calcium salt, the tofu is an excellent source of calcium. While 50 percent of the calories in tofu come from fat, a 4-ounce serving of tofu contains just 6 grams of fat. It is low in saturated fat and contains no cholesterol. Generally, the softer the tofu, the lower the fat content. Tofu is also very low in sodium, making it a perfect food for people on sodium-restricted diets.
It depends on which supermarket you buy your food from, but if you ask the shop assistant - I am sure they will direct you to the right section. Usually Tesco has it - but I'm not sure which section exactly. You''ll find it in the chilled vegetarian section in Tesco, which is fairly small so you'll have to look out for it. Otherwise you'll be able to find it in a health food shop like Holland and Barrett. It's not very nice though, Quorn is better.
