Is this ground beef safe to eat?
I purchased some ground beef on Saturday to make hamburgers for the 4th. I did not pay attention and just now saw that it has a sale date July 1st and says eat or freeze by this date. I had it in my fridge but did not freeze it. The meat has turned a brownish color on the outer layers but has no bad smell. Is it safe to cook or should I throw it out?
Answers: it is safe to cook.. what makes it turn brown is the exposure to air.. the sale date is recommended for the maximum flavor.. after a while it begins to loose its flavor.. you should be okay.. just be sure to cook it at the recomended internal temperature.. and get it done.. have a safe fourth.. the meat is fine.. Ehhh, you should throw it out. Since it's meat you should be extra careful. I think you should just throw it out to be safe. Or tell the store you purchased it from. If you bought it after the 1st, the store should've been more aware of it. You might even be able to get a dicount on your next buy? Haha just a suggestion! Generally, you'd be safest to throw it out and start with fresher meat. However, just throwing out the browned part is also a perfectly fine solution. The meat that is still red is perfectly good meat. Plus your just gonna cook it to kill the bacteria anyway. As long as you cook it fully, you won't have to worry about anything.
That is what I would do... throw out the brown part and keep the rest. When In doubt, throw it out! It'd better to be safe than sorry. Medical bills for a foodborne illness are expensive, and food poisoning from salmonella and E. Coli are no fun to deal with! So throw out that old meat, spend a little more money now, get fresh meat and enjoy! Throw it out.I am sure if you smell it that it will also have a weird smell to it.Better to be safe than sorry. Its fine if it smells okay and smells okay when cooking. Its defenitely okay if not brown all the way through. If it is and it is AT ALL smelly it is not okay and you should toss the beef. If no smell it should be good, but use it today. They put the to use date for the store to know when to reduce the price for a quik sale....
