Why do bagels have a hole in the middle ?
If your gonna add loads of fillings why not make them without the hole!
Answers: Because of the way they are cooked. They cook more evenly. So heat will go through the middle of the hole and cook it pefectly. Othwise you are going to burn the outside of the circle and the middle will not be cooked. sorry i don;t no Thats like saying why do hula hoops have holes in the middle? Yeesh lol,I agree it's a place for you to put your cream cheese in So the baker can keep them on a pole. so you can stick your finger through it For those oh so lonely nights. :( crap i used to know the answer to this.....or was it donuts? I'm a lot of help. To make sure they're hole some to eat!!!
Lol!!! not all bagels do, but i heard it was an accident with one of the machines, just like donuts :) Because if the hole were filled they would be a bun. ahhaahhaha thats like the stupidest question!
i dont know its just is you know Bagels come with holes...a tough but true reality. Because the person that invented them wanted them that way. i don't know about bagels, but with donuts, i heard that it was because way back when they first started making donuts, they didn't have holes in them, but the bakers realized the middle of their pastries wasn't baked/fried all the way through and they were soggy in the middle, so a baker put a hole in it... Real bagels are boiled in salt water before baking and a hook is used to "snare" them from the vat when they are each ready. Look at the dough you save Morry so u can twirl it on your finger it's easier to eat donuts are the same....the cooking process never cooks the center so they leave the center out so the rest will be cooked evenly Hi!
Don't know if this is the reason, but I just love it when you bite into a bagel and the lox filling oozes up through the hole to stimulate your nostrils and taste buds.
Fresh bagels from a Kosher deli are the best bread in the world, closely followed by Lancashire stone-baked fire-back oven-bottom Muffins and, in third place, Eritrean flat-bread.
Good wishes. Possibly invented by an ancestor of Mr Portnoy? It's just the traditional jewish shape...just like croissants are shaped how they are in France...it's just how they are. In olden times holes were a rare delicacy and rich people only could afford them. It was often felt that servants and slaves in the ancient lands would steal them from their masters and so a rich and powerful baker renowned for his great intellegence and inventiveness invented bagels to keep the holes in place and make it easy for the owners to find them and eat them, the hole of course remains attached to the bagel and should according to etiquette be eaten right before the last of the bagel.
Many show offs leave the last piece on their plate to both show off that they could afford the hole and to antagonise the finder that they had eaten the precious hole and just left its holder broken and useless.
:-) Bagels, and doughnuts, have the holes in the middle because it is very difficult to get them to stick to the outside. They keep falling off and rolling onto the floor. Also, assuming you did find a method of keeping the holes on the outside of the bagel, you would have even more problems trying to keep a filling inside.
Seriously, some stores do carry "Bagel Bread". Same chewy texture in sliced bread form. Great for people who prefer not to worry about fillings leaking thru the holes.
