I let frozen Chicken thaw, by accident?!

Question:

I let frozen Chicken thaw, by accident?

I took frozen chicken out of the freezer to get something from the back. Two hours later I looked in the garage and chicken was setting out thawed. If I refreeze it and cook it right is it dangerous?

OK refreezing is bad but I can’t cook two pounds of Chicken at 3 o'clock am. Can I put it in the Icebox till morning?

Answers:

The U. S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) advises, "Meat and poultry defrosted in the refrigerator may be refrozen before or after cooking. If thawed by other methods, cook before refreezing." (Basics for Handling Food Safely, April 2003 at www.fsis.usda.gov/OA/pubs/fact... )

(DO NOT thaw meat at room temperature, such as on the kitchen counter)- since this is what you have done it would probably be best to be safe and throw it away.
