Why do chefs make slits in bread loaves?!

Question:

Why do chefs make slits in bread loaves?

i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/image:four_...
Weird question, but just wondering...

Answers:

Cutting slits in risen bread helps remove the tension on the surface of the bread so that it doesn't crack when it expands in the oven.

Cutting it in designs makes it look attractive but not necessary for the successful baking of the bread.
