Domestic SOS - how can I get rid of a fishy cooking smell?!

Question:

Domestic SOS - how can I get rid of a fishy cooking smell?

We cooked fish tonight and now the kitchen/house smells like fish. How do we remove the smell? It's cold and wet and we can't open all the windows and there is NO extractor fan.

Answers:

Been there done that unfortunately, which is one reason that I now refuse to cook fish anywhere but on the grill outside. The smell would not go away except with time. I tried several things, which you can experiment with. Some things worked a little bit, but nothing would fully rid the house of the smell. I tried lemon juice, baking soda, vinegar, scented candles, opening the windows and using ceiling fans and box fans to move the smell outside. Make sure the trash from dinner is out of the house and then concentrate your cleaning on the stove/oven (depends on where you cooked the fish) as well as the sink and kitchen counters or dining room table. I feel for you, that smell is really unpleasant!
