Why does Mexico use sugar in Coca-cola and the U.S. uses crappy high-fructose corn syrup?!

Question:

Why does Mexico use sugar in Coca-cola and the U.S. uses crappy high-fructose corn syrup?

Answers:

Since the US took advantage of sugar a couple of centuries ago (sugar cane workers especially), the price of sugar sold to the US is much higher than the price of sugar sold to ANY other country. Which is why the US had to come up with a sugar substitute (high fructose corn syrup). I just learned this is my economics class.
