Safeway costs more than trader joes!(healthy food market)?!

Question:

Safeway costs more than trader joes!(healthy food market)?

I buy food from trader joes and safeway, and safeway can cost up to twice as much! I think safeway is trying to make up for their huge stores. either that, or people just don't realize that only safeway prices the "heathy" food at higher prices (when I say safeway, the same goes for every super market, exept for whole foods, it's the heathiest store you can go to, but it does cost alot, anyone know why trader joes is so cheap?

Answers:

Most/many of the products that Trader Joe's sell are good quality products made by other manufacturers, but packaged under the Trader Joe's name. They can purchase them, and turn around and sell them, at a lower price (no big, expensive marketing campaigns). TJ's also is known for putting their stores in strip malls that are slightly on the skids (often rejuvenating them), thus saving on real estate overhead (which is a big part of supermarket price). There are only two freestanding Trader Joe's in the US. Their whole strategy is to offer good foods for less. They have a specific niche market that works. Supermarkets know that once you're in their stores for other goods, you'll pay the price for the organic/healthy food rather than use the gas and time to make another trip.
