Which yogurt is better?!
Which yogurt is better?
Ok so I'm a calorie counter, I go with "Light and Fit" yogurt because it has a mere 60 calories and more yogurt as opposed to the "Yoplait" one that has 170 calories. I'm concerned because the Yoplait has been in so many fitness magizines as the best. But I actually so perfer the tast of Light and Fit to Yoplait, and I eat yogurt a lot. So if anyone has any info or opinions they're much appriciated. Thanks!

Better is such a subjective word. So let's talk about yogurt. Real yogurt contains a special bacterial culture that makes it curdle. That bacteria is also good for you. If you have seen those commercials for yogurt lately claiming that it will "keep you regular" there is truth there. But, that claim does not apply just to some "special" yogurt with a "special" bacteria. It applies to all "live culture" yogurt. Live culture means that bacteria were used to culture the yogurt and that they are still present. "Brown Cow" is our favorite brand of this kind of yogurt, but there are many others. The ingredients listed on the label will say "Contains active yogurt culture" or "acidophilus."
There are quite a few yogurt products on the market that do not contain live culture. These "yogurts" aren't really yogurt at all. They have been thickened with gelatin or various other thickening agents. They also often contain lots of artificial ingredients & preservatives. "Light & Fit" falls into this category.
So, which is "best?" Active culture yogurt wins hands down as far as health goes. It helps to regulate your digestion and can be of great benefit in other ways too. We like to buy a quart sized container of plain yogurt and then add our own flavorings. One of our favorites -
Add 1 chopped seeded cucumber to a quart of fresh, active culture yogurt along with the juice of 1/2 a lemon, a bit of salt and some oregano/thyme/dill/mint. This is often served in India & the various Mediterranean countries as a soup or cold salad. Scrumptious.
And about that calorie counting - are you comparing identically sized containers?
