Question about washing fruit...?

Is it okay to wash fruit before you put it inside the refridgerator? I seem to remember my mom telling me as a child that fruit spoils faster if you wash it first. However, I also remember my grandmother pre-washing her fruit and setting out in a bowl (not in the refridgerator). I like my fruit cold once it is ripe. Any thoughts?

I just washed some cherries and put them in the fridge, but did not let them dry first- ooops! Thank you.
