Fondant icing or something else?!

Fondant icing or something else?

My husband will be returning home soon after a 15 month deployment and I am going to bake him a cake that is a replica of his combat boot...its a brownish tan color, should i use fondant or something else like a royal icing or a buttercream. Any ideas?

Maybe a carmel icing - is the color and tasty, too.....Glad he is coming home safe and sound!!!! Give him a hug from all of us for his service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
