Trivia: Culinary Term I Hate, "Pre-heat the oven."?!

Question:

Trivia: Culinary Term I Hate, "Pre-heat the oven."?

Pre is a prefix meaning before. So, preheat the oven = cold because it is before heat. The oven is off. "Heat the oven to..." is a better term.
Have you considered this also?
It just occured to me one day.

Pre does not belong in any form or context. If the writer wants us to prepare items & heat the oven. Then the words "prior to" should be used.

If the oven was already at 200F from work just completed. And the next job required a 350F oven would "heat" the oven to 350F. the prefix is a term of a lazy mind.
Thanks for taking time to answer it was just a wimiscal thought.

Answers:

You're right. You make a lot of sense. I never thought of it - but preheat is kind of a dumb work.
