Remember Julia Child? What were the best and worst things she did for American arts de la cuisine?!

Question:

Remember Julia Child? What were the best and worst things she did for American arts de la cuisine?

Answers:

I can only agree half-way with m-w above.

The best thing she did was to let people know that quality cooking, which is some times French, is not difficult. But her refusal to shy away from fats, butter in particular is not a negative in my book.

The worst thing she did, was I think, her misuse of the word "Chef". She was a cook, never a chef. A chef de l' cuisine will supervise a staff, and has to be much more than an accomplished preparer of foods.

I see people misusing the term all the time here on YA, and elsewhere. The most horrendous misuse of the word was by a self-styled "Freelance Chef".. I read that as an unemployed cook.

A chef without staff is like a minister without a church or congregation, a sham.
