recipe?

Answers:

The frosting I made as a child is very simple -- The ingredients are butter, powdered sugar (confectioner's sugar), milk, vanilla and salt. You can buy all these at a grocery store or supermarket.
Melt 1/2 cup (1 stick, 1/4 lb) of butter (or margarine) in a small saucepan (pot with handle) over low heat. Sift in powdered sugar (about 1 cup). Stir until sugar is dissolved in butter. Sift in powdered sugar (about 1 cup) again. Stir in until sugar is dissolved in butter. Continue adding powdered sugar in small amounts until icing is smooth and not thin and watery. Remove from heat. Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla (if you don't have a teaspoon, use the cap off the bottle and add 1 or 2 capfuls). Add about 2 shakes of salt, 1/8 teaspoon or a pinch. Stir together. Let cool slightly then frost your cupcakes.
Shortening is a type of solid fat -- either vegetable or animal based. Crisco is a famous brand of shortening. Shortening is usually white.
