Gracious, there are all kinds!! What are you interested in? Quick snacks, cold snacks, hot snacks, snacks for one, snacks for a houseful? "Healthy" means different things to different people: to some people, pretzels are a healthy snack because they're not fried like chips are. To me, they're not healthy because they're made from wheat and wheat is hell on my immune system. I know more than a few moms who think "fruit roll-ups" are healthy snacks. I couldn't disagree more: "fruit roll-ups" are chock full of sugar, natural and not-so-natural, never mind the artificial colors and flavors added. Blech! Gimme a bunch of grapes any day! So without knowing your likes, dislikes and definitions of healthy, here are a few of my favorite quick and delicious snacks:
Air-popped popcorn is a great healthy snack.
Peanuts, mixed nuts or mixed seeds (sunflower, pumpkin) are really good - crunchy, salty, flavorful, yum! You can toss them in Worcestershire or soy sauce with a little butter and heat them in the oven at 350' for 10 minutes and create your own "cocktail party" mix.
Baby sweet peppers - plain or with a dressing to dip in
Apple slices and natural peanut butter - gooey, salty & sweet
Halved Roma tomatoes broiled with mozzerella cheese or try a caprese salad, layering slices of ripe tomato with slices of mozzerella and fresh basil. Drizzle a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar and you've got a great snack or light lunch!
A little cold sliced chicken wrapped in lettuce leaves dipped in soy sauce - quick, easy, low fat, high protein AND you get lettuce!
I usually keep a mixture of seeds and nuts on hand, always have tomatoes, always have a variety of cheeses, always have good deli ham (no sugar), always have greens. Cheese and meat are not bad in and of themselves, but remember that an ounce of cheese is usually worth two ounces of meat in terms of calories and protein content. A single serving of potato chips is supposed to be roughly 150 calories (as if anyone ever eats only 1 serving of chips at a time). You can swap the 1 ounce of chips for 3 ounces of cold cooked chicken breast for the same 150 calories. Get more bang for your calorie buck, be creative and don't rule anything out as a possible snack!
Enjoy, eat well, laugh loud!
