Why does my granola bar have ethanol in it?!

Question:

Why does my granola bar have ethanol in it?

It's a General Mills Fiber One Oats & Chocolate bar. The 7th ingredient is ETHANOL. Isn't that used as a fuel? Or found in alcholic beverages? WHY would it be in a granola bar?

Just wondering... cuz it seems like an unnecessary and gross ingredient.

Answers:

Cool! Booze in the Fiber One bars... I'm gonna go get one.

Well, ethanol is usually accompanied with Shellac where the ethanol is a carrier for shellac.

Shellac provide a nice shine and coating to the bar and chocolate. Think reese's pieces.

If you think ethanol is gross, I won't tell you what shellac is made from and some common uses.
