Might seem like a rather daft question.. but the 'best eaten by' date on food (in the UK)?
is that the definate last date on which the food is ok to be eaten by? I seem to remember some people saying that there is about a week on that date.... which will still be ok! Just realised that we have so much cheese and houmous in our fridge that might have to be thrown!?
Answers:
Use by, eat by and sell by dates are quite a recent idea. Sixty years ago before all this "guidance" people relied on common sense, smell and observation." If cheese has started walking towards the door then maybe it is time to let it go" If there is a little mould then trim it off.
Even with the dates who decides? A chicken doesn't start a meter on it's egg as soon as it lays it! (And who can be so certain when the egg was laid Especially free range)
