Is there a way to tell if tap water is contaminated?

I sometimes see tiny stuff floating around but is there anything specific to look or smell for?

Answers:

Put 2 tbsp. of bleach and 2 tbsp. of Hydrogen peroxide into 1 8oz glass of water. If it gets foamy, it is contaminated. Do not drink this water.
