How do you cut a coconut in half??? I tried everything?!

Question:

How do you cut a coconut in half??? I tried everything?

It's a ripe coconut, not young and not in the husk.

I tapped the equator with a heavy knife, I hit the equator on the edge of a brick wall, none of this worked. I finally gave up on getting two some what symmetrical sides, wrapped it in a towel and hit it with a hammer.

I know how to break it into PIECES but everything I looked up doesn't work and I'm afraid of saws.

I SAID that I ALREADY used the knife method. Good God!

Okay, the first link below is a "photo and description" of how to. It suggests something you didn't say you tried (nail and hammer). But I wouldn't "smash away" as the author suggests. Perhaps hitting firmly around the equator with a hammer (while coconut is in a towel) is enough. If you want to preserve the water inside, see link 2.

Link 2 shows a man breaking open a coconut very easily. It sounds like you tried this method, but perhaps you didn't hit it hard enough or with a meat cleaver? He hits very firmly with a cleaver. But if you did, then maybe you should try opening a coconut while it's still in the husk (by husk, I assume you mean the white fruit that surrounds the brown, hairy coconut shell). See links 3 and 4 for examples of how to do this. VERY INTERESTING!

Good luck!
