What happens if you swallow chewing gum? Does it get digested or pass through 'unscathed'?!

Question:

What happens if you swallow chewing gum? Does it get digested or pass through 'unscathed'?

My mother told me it blocked your guts up, but obviously it doesn't as I usually do swallow chewing gum. What really happens to it? I don't know what the gum bit is made of - gum arabica, plastic or what?

Answers:

Chewing gum is made of gum base, sweeteners, softeners, and flavorings.

The gum base was originally made from various natural resins, including sorva and jelutong. These days, though, it's synthetic. You what the technical term is for a deformable synthetic substance? Plastic.
