Turnips and swedes?!

Turnips and swedes?

Why is it that what I call a turnip is considered a swede by Northerners, and what I call a swede is considered aturnip?

How did this North/South divide originate?

Isn't the diversity in this country something to treasure, We can't even agree on the name of a root vegetable, One of the most important questions in life. Never mind world peace or universal suffrage the Turnip/Swede debate will run and run.
