Why does a coconut float ?!

Question:

Why does a coconut float ?

Answers:

The coconut that falls from the coconut palm has a solid outer shell with a thick layer of porous fiber underneath it. That has a lot of air pockets in it so the coconut will float for some time. The coconuts you see in the store have had the fiberous layer removed so all you see is the center pod. That pod has water in it, depending on how old it is - the older, the less water. When a coconut is "ripe" you can spoon the white part out like custard. What we see in the stores is really overripe coconut - the hard white part.
