Why do people in the USA call back bacon Canadian bacon?!

Question:

Why do people in the USA call back bacon Canadian bacon?

In Canada, we have regular bacon and back bacon. We didn't name it Canadian bacon and we don't call it that. Isn't there any back bacon in the US?

PurplePassion: That link you gave was to some kind of British cured bacon/meat. I was talking about when I am in the US and they ask if I would like Canadian bacon and when it comes, it is just regular back bacon.

Yes, in that link the first picture is regular bacon, the third is what we call back bacon and the US calls Canadian bacon for some reason.

We are giving y'all credit for it.. be happy eh =) jk

Around the turn of the 19th Century, England had a pork shortage and began importing pork "side bacon" from Canada; the English smoked the meat and called it "Wiltshire sides." And somehow Americans got the idea that bacon from Canada was smoked.

Apparently that's how they distinguished the two and the name stuck.

Edit: Sorry Shine! that was the wrong link.. which bacon do you call back bacon? the one that looks like ham?

Thanks for replying Shine! that's what I thought =)
