Stones in fruit?!

Stones in fruit?

strange as it sounds i not bear nectarine or peach stones. so hard, lumpy,bumpy grooves and pits tend to make my skin crawl so why are they in the fruit in the 1st place, its very repusling

They protect the seed which is nestled inside.
