I haven't been to Egypt but have traveled extensively through China and Mexico (not the resort towns). First, I would recommend that you go to your doctor and get a prescription for Ciproflaxin (sp?) mostly just called Cipro for short. Its for traveler's diaherrea. I have been advised not to take Immodium if its food related illness but I would ask your doctor about that. Cipro is an antibiotic so if you get sick make sure you take the entire prescription.
You can drink the water so long as its been boiled. So hot coffee and hot tea are fine. I would recommend not having drinks with any ice cubes. Alcohol in a beverage will not kill the bacteria in the ice so far as I know. Drink bottled water but make sure that the bottle was sealed before you drink it. Many vendors will refill water from the tap and sell them to gullible tourists. Do not let restaurants bring you an open bottle of water. Insist that you have a closed bottle that is sealed.
Eat the fruit and vegetables just make sure you can peel them. For example, don't just eat a peach with the skin. Peel the peach and then enjoy it.
If you are a picky eater, I would recommend doing what a colleague of mine did before heading to India for two weeks on business. He brought with him tuna in the sealed foil packs that way if dinner that night didnt work out for him, he wasn't starving in his hotel that night. In the past, I've packed a few Luna bars for emergency dinners.
Lastly, have a great time and try not to worry too much. If you get sick, you get sick. Its happened to the best of us.
