French Drinks?

Time period probably 1788 or so. Professors drinking various liquids: what is probable? Coffee? How hard was that liquid chocolate to get? Wine?


Answers:

In addition to other distilled liquors, brandies like cognac and Armagnac would have been popular; also wine, beer, coffee, tea, and chocolate.

Chocolate was introduced in France by Anne of Austria, a Spanish princess, who married Louis XIII of France and in 1615 took the Spanish custom of chocolate drinking to France.

Hard cider, applejack, and apple brandy (like Calvados) were popular too.

Due to poor water sanitation in Europe and the Americas around this time period (18th century) the majority of the population consumed alcoholic drinks daily.
