How long can you keep sugar for?!

Question:

How long can you keep sugar for?

I have had a bowl of sugar in a tupperware bowl for three years is it still good?

Answers:

Yes. As long as it is in a sealed container and not exposed to moisture it will stay good indefinitely.

Sugar is hygroscopic. This means it will absorb moisture from available sources, including micrscopic cellular animals (i.e. germs, bacteria, etc) thus killing them and sugar will even suck the moisture out of the thin air. This is why you want to store sugar in a sealed container, it will absorb humidity from the air and harden into lumps and eventually one solid chunk. Lumpy or hardened sugar is still good, just bust it up. As long as no pests, like ants, get into your sugar, it will be fine.

From a sugar company:
"What is the shelf life of sugar?
Sugar, properly stored, has an indefinite shelf life because it does not support microbial growth."
