Dirty Prawns???!

Question:

Dirty Prawns???

I recently saw (on one the many celeb chef flicks) that you are supposed slit the back of the prawn and clean out the brown line...... It is apparently their s*it!!!!! This has made me feel very sick as I eat prawns all the time and never did that. I went to my local restaurant at the weekend and ordered clean king prawns and was horrified to see the brown lines in their backs. Whats the story? The owner wasn't very pleased when I mentioned this and the 'ready to eat' king prawns from supermarkets also have a awful lot of 'the brown stuff' in them. Is it really bad for you (is it really s*it). No more King Prawns for me for a while. AArrrghhhh! What do you think? I know mussells are filter fish but don't prawns are.

Answers:

It's fine to eat the brown line - you don't see Spanish or other Mediterranean people bothering to pick that off. It is the gut, but it really won't harm you at all. I eat it all the time, some chefs just prefer to take it out as it looks prettier without it that's all.
