Does a food bank give out perishable items?
I have heard that you get mostly dried and canned goods. Do they give out fresh fruit and vegetables or dairy products, such as eggs and milk?
Answers: Some food banks handle perishables, some do not. I volunteer in 6 food banks in my county. Four of them handle frozen foods. Three of those four also handle refrigerated foods. Before each client is provided with food, they verify whether or not the client has storage facilities for the frozen and/or refrigerated foods. Most all food banks also handle other perishable foods such as breads, fresh fruits and fresh vegetables. What the food banks disperse varies week-to-week. They depend on the largess of Federal, State and County agencies, supermarket overstock & donations, local farmer donations and donations from the public. In the food banks I volunteer in, about 70% of the provided foods are non-perishable, with the remainder being perishables of one sort or another. The one in the small town closest to us does. They have fresh veggies and such regularly. However I have volunteered at the food bank in the next large town and it was canned goods only. No. They don't have the storage for that type of food. Most people need non-perishable items more than perishable, and have storage for non-perishable in prepardness for bad weather. Government programs provide perishable. no Not all food banks, some do if they have refrigarated sourses.Mostley dried foods, but some cherches give out fresh items to single parents.
I sugguest you file for food stamps at DHS. Some do, some don't. It depends on what is donated, if they can store it and how fast they can give it aways so that it doesn't spoil. Most foodbanks are non-persihables only. There will NOT be milk unless it is powdered. Fruit and vegetables, maybe, but don't expect much. Eggs, probably not, cheese maybe since it can be left out a little longer. You might get bread since so many bakeries donate. depends on where you live. There are some IN Kansas CIty Missouri that do give out things like chicken and beef and hotdogs. JUst depends on where you live. Some food banks have a limited supply, due to lack of storage space for large amounts in cooler and freezers. Others give out vouchers for those items if they are badly needed. Don't be afraid to ask if you may need those items. yes, but it all depends on the day. you never know what kind of donations you will get. in summer lots of farmers tend to donate fresh produce, the hunters also donate deer meat during winter in my area.
