Tips on helping ...?
My daughter was asked to help sell chocolate bars as a fund raiser for the church youth group. She is 12 years old and kind of shy. I think it would be good for her, but do you have any tips on her selling?
They have to sell 160 bars.
Answers: I did this when I was a kid and my daughter does it now.
She should start by selling to her friends and family. Those people won't say "no" and that will bolster her confidence. Once she gets the satisfaction of making some sells, it will be easier to approach strangers.
Does she have a friend that can sell with her? I bet she could find some strength in numbers. They could try going in to all the local businesses that your family may have some rapport with. The deli, the dry cleaners, etc. Usually small business owners will want to retain good customers business and will buy at least one. Also, your shy daughter will sort-of know these people, making it a bit easier.
Last but not least, there is always the option of standing in front of the supermarket. She'll sell a lot and maybe after all the bars she sold the other way, she'll have the confidence to do it. try going door to door and tell her to ask her friends...or what i did in girl scouts stand outside a store and ask ppl to buy them but make sure to get permission first. go to door to door with her she should be with a adult first,Go to your local grocery store and ask the manager if she can stand out front an sell there lots of traffic. "have to" ???

Sounds like religious blackmail to me.
But if you just get out and try selling a few, at least you tried....the church should be happy that you trying to help them regardless of if you meet that target or not. I agree with the door to door thing with you about 10 feet behind her. But first, work on her patter with her. How do you greet people, how does your spiel sound, always say thank you whether or not they buy anything. "Hi, my name is ___ and I'm with ___ and we're trying to raise money for ____. I'm selling candy bars for ____ for the project. Would you be interested in buying a few candy bars? They're only $__ a bar!" And tell her to smile. :)
I don't think the supermarket trick would work because it's too easy to brush by the "hawker" and not buy anything. But at their door they feel a bit more guilty about turning someone down and will at least buy something.
That's just my experience from doing it as a kid.
